A Traeger that won't turn on has four genuinely different official fixes.
Which one applies depends entirely on your controller generation: an auger-box wiring check on Woodridge, a flame-icon power indicator on Westwood, a firepot-ash-and-ignitor check on touchscreen Ironwood and Timberline models, and a physical, user-replaceable fuse only on older non-WiFi AC grills.
One of the top-ranking guides for this problem treats the fix as one universal procedure: outlet, cord, fuse, switch, board, in that order, on every Traeger ever made. That's worth challenging. Traeger's own support documentation shows the physical fuse check doesn't even exist for three of the four generations. A reader with a WiFi-connected grill following that advice is opening up a grill looking for a part it doesn't have exposed the way the guide implies.
Which Controller Do You Have?
Answer this before opening anything up.
Is it a Woodridge, Woodridge Pro, or Woodridge Elite? That's the newest controller generation, and it has its own dedicated fix below.
If not, does the display use a touchscreen, or a dial and knob? A touchscreen means Ironwood, Ironwood XL, Timberline, or Timberline XL.
Does it pair with the Traeger app at all? If yes, and it's a dial or knob rather than a touchscreen, you're on a Westwood or an earlier WiFi-connected dial controller. If no, you're on an older, non-WiFi AC grill. An error code or a dial position will narrow things further from there.
The Fix for Each Controller
Woodridge, Woodridge Pro, Woodridge Elite. Traeger's own article for this line opens with a routing check before any real troubleshooting. You're in the right place only if the power switch itself doesn't light up and the controller screen stays dark. If the switch lights up but the screen doesn't, or the switch lights up but the grill just won't ignite, that's a different official article.
Once you've confirmed you're in the right branch, check the outlet first (see the shared checks below). Then open the auger box, which takes ten screws. Inside, unplug and reseat the cable connecting the drivetrain circuit board to the main controller, and check the wiring isn't pinched or damaged. There's no physical fuse anywhere in this path.
Westwood. Before you touch anything, check the indicator below the flame icon. If it's lit, the grill already has power. The controller is just asleep, and pressing the + or - button wakes it. No fault, no fix needed.
If that indicator is dark too, work the outlet checks first, then remove six hopper-panel screws and look for three red LEDs on the back of the controller. Lit LEDs mean the same "it's asleep" diagnosis as the flame icon. Dark LEDs mean reseating the controller's power connector and the power switch's two red wire connectors, with the grill unplugged.
Touchscreen Ironwood, Ironwood XL, Timberline, Timberline XL. Start with a power cycle. Unplug for about ten seconds, plug back in, and try the power button.
If the button lights but the display doesn't, that's a separate display-specific article. If neither lights, move to the outlet check.
Here's the part most guides miss entirely. Traeger's own documentation flags a genuinely surprising cause tied to this generation specifically: an ignitor failure can trip your GFCI outlet or breaker, and that failure is very often caused by ash building up in the firepot until it physically touches the ignitor. If your outlet keeps tripping and the grill otherwise checks out, clean the firepot before you chase anything electrical any further.
If the outlet is genuinely fine, Traeger's own next step uses the grill's Induction Cooktop accessory as a load tester. Unplug the grill's power cord and the Induction Cooktop's cord from the power strip on the back, then plug the Induction Cooktop into the grill's power cord directly. If it lights up, shown by an orange ring around its dial, the cord is good and the fault sits downstream in the internal power strip or the motherboard, checked the same way in sequence. If it doesn't light up, the power cord itself needs replacing.
Older non-WiFi AC grills. Check one thing before anything else: is the dial actually set to Shutdown? Traeger's own documentation calls this out by name as a real cause, distinct from any fault. The grill won't power up on that setting even with a perfectly good outlet and cord.
If the dial is set correctly, work the outlet and cord checks, then move to the fuse. This is the one generation where a physical fuse actually exists. Unscrew the controller, find the fuse, and inspect it for burn marks or a broken filament, the same tell as a burnt-out lightbulb. Traeger's own spec for the replacement is a standard 3-5 Amp, 250 Volt fuse.

The Checks Every Path Shares First
Whichever controller you have, three of the four official paths each include the same outlet test somewhere before any disassembly, even if it's not always the very first step. It's worth ruling out early regardless.
Plug a real appliance into the outlet, not a phone charger. A toaster, blow dryer, or coffee maker all pull enough load to prove the outlet works. Traeger's own troubleshooting sets the bar at 300 watts minimum for this test, which a phone charger never clears.
If it's a GFI/GFCI outlet, reset it first by pressing the button in the middle. If the outlet checks out fine but keeps tripping once the grill's plugged back in, something on the grill side is the real problem, not the wall.
Traeger's own documentation also flags a detail worth knowing if your GFCI outlet has been reliable for years and suddenly isn't. Those outlets carry a roughly 20-year rated lifespan, but issues often start showing up after just 5.
If you're running the grill through an extension cord, that's named as an official cause on the Woodridge, Westwood, and non-connected paths. The test is simple. Unplug the extension cord, plug the grill straight into the wall outlet, and see if it powers on.
If it does, the cord, not the grill, was the problem. We'd replace it with something rated for the load rather than whatever was already coiled up in the garage.
Unplug the grill before opening any hopper or service panel on any of these paths. Only reconnect power for the specific live check a step calls for.
Stop Chasing an Outlet That Isn't the Problem
If you're running the grill through a thin household extension cord, that's often the actual cause hiding behind what looks like a random electrical fault. It's also the one thing on this list you can fix once and not think about again.
